Strasbourg European Parliament

Posted by admin in General, Guide, Hotels, Strasbourg Landmarks, Strasbourg Tour, Tips | Leave a comment

The official seat of the European Parliament, The city of Strasbourg is the ninth largest metropolitan area in France. The Parliament’s buildings located in the European Quarter of the city, is shared with other European organizations which are separate from the European Union’s. Located in the Wacken district of Strasbourg, south of Schiltigheim, The Louise Weiss building – the main building of the parliament- was designed by Architecture Studio Europe, a Paris-based team of architects who were inspired by Roman amphitheatres. One of the biggest and most visible buildings of Strasbourg, The Louise Weiss’s main tower is 60m tall. With its surface of 220,000m² the building is a wonder to look at and is referred to as “LOW” in internal EP documents.

The open side of the 60m tall tower of this building faces west. It’s voluntarily left unfinished part is alleged to have been oriented towards east Europe which was not a part of the EU then and thus is believed to hold heavy symbolic meaning. Many believe that the tower’s design bears similarity to that of the Tower of Babel, thought his belief is not backed by much proof. Members are seated in a hemicycle, and the visitors are allowed to watch from the public galleries located above the chamber around the entire perimeter. The interior of the building is almost transparent and has a complex design which often becomes difficult to navigate, yet it is a beauty when looked at from outside.

Three secondary buildings, across the river from the Louise Weiss are present. The Winston Churchill building and The Salvador de Madariaga building are located side by side and were designed by designed by the municipal architect François Sauer with the assistance of Jean-Paul Friedmann in a post-modern style often characterized by convoluted, serpentine architecture, relative heights and glazed facades. Pierre Pflimlin building, the third building is heart-shaped and comparatively low built.

Altogether the parliament’s varied buildings with their splendid architecture increases the attraction that the city of Strasbourg holds for tourists

Strasbourg Christmas Market (Christkindelsmärik)

Posted by admin in Fun, General, Guide, Hotels, News, Shopping, Strasbourg Landmarks, Strasbourg Tour, Tips | Leave a comment

Strasbourg is one of the nine largest cities in France with nearly half a million inhabitants in a metropolitan area spanning across the river into the German city of Kehl, on the eastern bank of the Rhine.

Christkindelsmärik is a Christmas market held annually in Strasbourg, France, near Strasbourg Cathedral. Strasbourg has been holding this Christmas market around its cathedral since 1570. Built between 1176 and 1439 and with a 142 metre tower (the highest cathedral tower in France), the cathedral is undoubtedly Strasbourg’s finest architectural highlight. Just near-by on place du Château is the Musée de l’Oeuvre Notre Dame – a splendid museum of medieval religious art related to the cathedral.

The Christkindelsmärik, Marché de l’Enfant Jésus, is one of the oldest Christmas markets which draws between 1.5 and 2 million visitors each year and has over sixty stalls. The market takes place annually, from 24 November to 24 December. It mainly takes place on Place Kléber, Place Broglie, Place du Marché aux cochons de lait and around the cathedral.

The Strasbourg Cathedral bombing plot was an al-Qaeda plan to bomb the Christmas market at the foot of the cathedral during the Christmas celebrations of 2000.

The Christkindelsmärik’s Christmas tree is traditionally of imposing height. Topping at 32.5 m (107 ft), the 2010 tree surpassed its already high predecessor of 2009 at 28 m (92 ft).

Christmas markets can be found in many places, but the most important and beautiful are place Broglie and place de la Cathédrale, although they are crowded. They are the best places to drink hot wine (vin chaud) and to eat Christmas cookies (Brädeles).

Even when there are no special events on in Strasbourg, walking around the old town is a very nice way to pass a day. And there are lots of good cafes to stop and rest in as you make your tour.

Cathedrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg

Posted by admin in General, Guide, Hotels, Shopping, Strasbourg Landmarks, Strasbourg Tour, Tips | Leave a comment

The Roman Catholic Cathedral in Starsburg, France, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg, is widely considered to be among the finest examples of high, or late, Gothic architecture. Standing 142 metres tall, it held the pride of being the world’s tallest building from 1647 to 1874, when it was surpassed by St. Nikolai’s Church, Hamburg. Today it is the sixth-tallest church in the world.

This massive cathedral has a pink hue owing to the use of sandstone in its construction and is visible far across the plains of Alsace and can be seen from as far off as the Vosges Mountains or the Black Forest on the other side of the Rhine.

The construction of the structure began with the quire and the north transept in a Romanesque style, reminiscent of and actually inspired by the Imperial Cathedrals in its monumentality and height. But in 1225, a team coming from Chartres revolutionized the construction by suggesting a Gothic architecture style. So, the parts of the nave that had already been begun in Romanesque style were torn down.

Like the city of Strasbourg, the cathedral connects Münster-German and French cultural influences, while the eastern structures, e.g. the choir and south portal, still have very Romanesque features, with more emphasis placed on walls than on windows.
Above all, the famous west front, decorated with thousands of figures, is a masterpiece of the Gothic era.

In 1539, the world’s first documented Christmas tree was set up inside the Münster. In 1682, the choir screen (built in 1252) was broken out to expand the quire towards the nave. Remains of the choir screen are displayed in the Musée de l’Œuvre Notre-Dame and in The Cloisters. The main or high altar, a major work of early Renaissance sculpture, was also demolished that year. Fragments can be seen in the Musée de l’Œuvre Notre-Dame.

The Cathedral was hit by British and American bombs during air raids on Strasbourg’s center on 11 August 1944, which also heavily damaged the Palais Rohan and the Sainte-Madeleine Church. In 1956, the Council of Europe donated the famous choir window by Max Ingrand, the “Strasbourg Madonna”.

Architecture of Strasbourg

The city of Strasbourg is known for its sandtone Gothic Cathedral that has a beautiful astronomical clock and for the medieval cityscape of Rhineland with black and white timber framed buildings noticeably at the Petite-France district alongside the Ill and in the streets and squares around the cathedral, where the renowned Maison Kammerzell is situated. The medieval streets of the city primarily constitutes the Rue Mercière, Rue des Dentelles, Rue du Bain aux Plantes, Rue des Juifs, Rue des Frères, Rue des Tonneliers, Rue du Maroquin, Rue des Charpentiers, Rue des Serruriers, Grand’ Rue, Quai des Bateliers, Quai Saint-Nicolas and Quai Saint-Thomas. The noted medieval square there includes places like Place de la Cathédrale, Place du Marché Gayot, Place Saint-Etienne, Place du Marché aux Cochons de Lait and Place Benjamin Zix.

Apart from the cathedral, Strasbourg, houses several other medieval churches that somehow resisted the many wars and destruction that plagued the city. The Romanesque Église Saint-Etienne, was to an extent was destroyed in 1944 in an Anglo-American bombing raids. The Neo-Gothic church Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux Catholique served as a shrine for many centuries. It is decorated with several 15th-century wooden work and painted altars as arriving from now destroyed churches and as been put there for the public viewing.

The German Renaissance has left the city with some wonderful and noted buildings like the current Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie, a former town hall, is decorated with the French Baroque and Classicism with various particuliers. Other building of this sort I the cities are the Palais Rohan is the most noted one. Other buildings of its type are the Hôtel du Préfet, the Hôtel des Deux-Ponts and the city-hall Hôtel de Ville etc. The largest baroque building of Strasbourg though is the 1720s main building of the Hôpital civil. The buildings in the French Neo-classicism, is the Opera House on Place Broglie that most prestigiously shows up that style.

Strasbourg also provides the high-class eclecticist buildings at its extended German district, as example of the Wilhelmian architecture. As most of the cities in Germany suffered the elaborate damage during World War II and there are remained only some parts of it. Streets, boulevards and avenues are harmonized in a manner up to seven stories that they surprises and shows up the elaborate examples of German urban lay-out and of this architectural style that caters and mixes up about five centuries of European architecture as well as Neo-Egyptian, Neo-Greek and Neo-Babylonian styles. The city has many bridges, including the medieval, four-towered Ponts Couverts.

Strasbourg City Information

Found on the border of France and Germany, Strasbourg is hailed for having being exquisitely beautiful. The city is located on a river front and has buildings made out of timber.

The European parliament is found within Strasbourg city. It also houses a Christmas market that is known as France’s oldest. The parliament’s location overlooks the Christmas market. Over the centuries the city has been controlled by the French and the Germans interchangeably. Traveling past the City’s edge one encounters the Black Forest and the river Rhine. Trips to Alscase France and Germany are offered daily. The city remarkably shares the culture, food, wine and the language of both the French and Germans. The buildings are however built in likeness to German architecture.

The river Ill winds through sections of the city making it appropriate for the number of cruises that are taken to view the city. Popular dishes in the German culture may be offered in eateries using French names. The dishes have German influence but are prepared to observe quality standards attributed to French cuisine. Having a French influence, the cuisine found in the city is finger licking.

The city is reachable by direct flight. Another option would be to take a plane to Frankfurt or into Paris and get to the city using the rail road. The railroad journey into the city takes 2 hours from Frankfurt and 4 hours from Paris. Getting around within the city is through the tramway lines or by using buses.

The city’s major attractions include the Strasbourg cathedral which is famed for being built using architecture which is Gothic. The cathedral is surrounded by busy restaurants and equally busy shops. The Christmas market is hosted on the cathedral’s front yard. Strasbourg’s loveliest and best neighborhood, La Petite France, makes one of the city’s best attractions. A concoction of the aromas from restaurant cuisine and freshly baked pastries dances through the air as one passes through the neighborhood. The neighborhood with cobble stoned roads is appropriate for having a walk around as you take in the view and do a little bit of shopping in the numerous small shops. The timber built buildings are decorated with plants which appear to be blooming. The buildings earned the city the coveted four flower ranking. Another attraction of the city is the place Kleber which offers one the opportunity to shop and to watch other people shopping.

While in the city there are a number of other places you can visit or things that you can do. You could visit the Musee Archeologique, the archaeological museum, which is one of the city’s popular museums. It contains a number of Roman artifacts with a number of the artifacts labeled in French. You can also take the Segway tour which last about two hours as you glide around the city. Palais de Rohan houses three museums, the archaeological museum, museum of decorative arts and museum of fine arts, and is a site that you should visit while in Strasbourg.

Strasbourg weather is likened to the weather in Germany. In winter it snows and the temperatures can get very cold. This however gives the city the most exquisite look around the Christmas period. During spring time flowers are in bloom giving the city an attractive look. Summer is marked by warm whether which gives the city an inviting feeling. In Fall the city gains a magnificent look while in autumn the city’s wonderful colors burst out.

Colmar, Baden Baden and HeidelBerg cities offer great sites to take day trips. At the Baden Baden which is located more in Germany, the Black Forest can be viewed. Bordered by river Rhine’s valley to the South side and the West side, the forest makes up a mountain range that is wooded.
